Brisbane City Council

Brisbane is Australia's largest city in the sub-tropics, enjoying an enviable climate of hot, brilliant summers and clear, mild winters that makes it the ideal destination for visitors all year round. While Brisbane has all the facilities of a modern city it retains a friendly, easier pace of life, surrounded by parks, gardens and beaches.

From atop Mt Coot-tha, Brisbane's views unfold - stretching for miles in each direction. The city centre is compact contained in a single bend in the broad, meandering Brisbane river. Shining glass towers stand side by side with historic sandstone churches and the gleaming white stucco of the city's heritage colonial buildings.

POPULATION

Brisbane is Australia’s third largest city - with only Melbourne and Sydney being larger. Brisbane’s estimated resident population in 2004 was 1.77 million, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics.

Cultural diversity

The population is also culturally diverse. Currently over twenty-six percent of Brisbane’s population was born overseas. In 1996 over fifteen percent of the population spoke a language other than English at home with Cantonese, Italian, Vietnamese, Mandarin, Greek, Spanish, German, Tagalog (Filipino), Polish and Russian being some of the most commonly spoken languages.
